Stilt fishing is one of Sri Lanka’s most intriguing traditional fishing methods. According to records, it was established shortly after World War II. This type of fishing was more common along the coast until the 2004 tsunami, which temporarily halted such activities until recent years. The picturesque sight of fishermen perched on branched poles as they skillfully fish at dawn, noon, and dusk is now common along the southern coast in towns like Koggala, Kaththaluwa, and Ahangama. Occasional stilt fishermen can also be seen in the Madu River, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Stilt fishermen make the activity appear easy and comfortable, but it requires a great deal of skill and balance. A vertical pole with an attached crossbar is embedded in the seafloor or riverbed among the shallows. The crossbar allows the fishermen to sit a few meters above the water, casting few shadows on the water and causing little to no disturbance to the sea life. The stilt fishermen then use a rod from this perilous position to bring in a good catch of spotted herrings and small mackerels from the sea’s or river’s comparative shallows. The catch is collected in a bag tied to the pole or to their waist.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Those interested in learning more about stilt fishing should book a tour to Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, or Unawatuna beaches. Some of the fishermen are eager to demonstrate how they fish and talk about their lives.
